Abnormal menstrual bleeding

What is it?

Extra heavy bleeding or prolonged periods of more than seven days account for 5 percent of gynecologic visits by women in their 30s and 40s. In addition to inconvenience, it can cause physical discomfort and stress.

Why does it happen?

There can be many causes for excess menstrual bleeding. Any woman experiencing abnormal periods should consult with her provider to determine the cause and best treatment.

What can be done?

We will work with you to discover the best treatment based on your life situation. Birth control pills can often help by providing hormone management. Intrauterine devices may also be appropriate for some women.

For women beyond childbearing age there are possible surgical interventions. These might include endometrial ablation, a minimally invasive procedure that destroys the lining of the uterus, causing periods to decrease or stop. Other surgical options might be considered.
